Frequently Asked Questions About the GED

What subjects does the GED include? How long will each part of the test take to complete?
  • Reasoning through Language Arts - 150 minutes (includes a break)
  • Mathematical Reasoning - 70 minutes
  • Science - 90 minutes 
  • Social Studies - 70 minutes

Is the test written or computerized?
  • The test is computer-based; the extended response will be typed.  

How important is keyboarding/typing speed? 
  • The time will be adequate for students to write their answers even with minimal keyboarding skills. 

How is the GED test scored?  What is a passing score?
  • Testers must reach a score of 145 or better on each module.

Do all the tests have to be completed at one time or can they be taken on different dates?
  • No, test-takers can take what they want,  when they want, depending on the schedule of their local testing center. 

How is the math test structured ? 
  • Math is a two-part test: Part I allows a calculator; Part II does not allowed a calculator.  The on-screen calculator is part of the computer program. 

How much does the test cost? 
  • The GED test costs $120. ($30 per subject)​​ Retests are $10 per test for the first two.

  • Cells phones are not allowed in the testing room. Students should plan to leave cell phones locked in their vehicle.
